Michael L. Tobin, M.D.

Michael L. Tobin, MD was born in South Dakota, but was raised in El Paso, Texas. He received a BS in Biology from the University of Texas at El Paso and went on to medical school at Texas Tech, in Lubbock on a Naval Health Professions Scholarship. He was selected for a Family Practice Internship at Camp Pendelton Naval Hospital and enjoyed living at the beach in Oceanside during that time.

Although Dr. Tobin was selected for a position in Hawaii, he chose to attend Naval Flight Surgeon training in Pensacola, Florida where he completed initial flight school along side student naval aviators. He joined Carrier Air Wing One, stationed in Jacksonville, Florida for a tour attached to the aircraft carrier USS America. During a long deployment to the Arabian Sea, he recognized his calling to radiology, applied, and was accepted to training at Naval Hospital San Diego, where he completed his residency in 1990.

After a brief tour in Rota, Spain, he joined the teaching staff at Oakland Naval Hospital. Dr. Tobin enjoyed working with residents from the Naval Hospital, Stanford, UC San Francisco, and an Air Force training program in the Bay Area. He headed the Mammography program and was instrumental in the adoption of stereotactic core biopsy at the hospital.

When base closure came to the Oakland Hospital, Dr. Tobin returned to southern California, rejoining the Naval Medical Center in San Diego. He was the faculty lead for Chest Radiography, headed the installation of the new PACS, and became the head of PACS and teleradiology at NMCSD. Dr. Tobin is a diplomat of the American Board of Radiology, a member of the American College of Radiology, the Radiological Society of North America, the San Diego County Medical Association, California Medical Association, and the San Diego Radiological Society. He joined RMG in 2000, and began a full time position in 2002 working at Scripps Mercy Hospital and our outpatient imaging centers.
