Mucomyst Prophylaxis Prior to Contrast Administration
Upon request by the referring physician and with consultation by an RMG physician, a patient with chronic renal insufficiency may receive Mucomyst prophylaxis prior to receiving intravenous contrast at any RSP site or Scripps Mercy Hospital. Mucomyst is an anti-oxidant that has been shown to prevent iodinated contrast-induced nephrotoxicity, when taken before the contrast exam and combined with hydration. The pre-treatment protocol is as follows:
Mucomyst 600 mg orally twice a day for four (4) doses beginning the day before the contrast exam.
