Select Nerve Root Block Follow-Up Care
I. Post-Procedure Care
Following the selective nerve root block procedure, the patient is placed in the recovery room long enough to be assessed and to evaluate the pain response
If there are no complications, the patient is discharged within 30-60 minutes
Occasionally, there may be leg/buttocks numbness or weakness in the distribution of the nerve injected. This typically lasts from minutes to 1-2 hours.
II. Post-Discharge Instructions
At discharge, the patient should be accompanied by a responsible person who will drive them home
Activity should be limited for the remainder of the day, with no operating of heavy equipment or driving
The radiologist who performed the procedure (if during the day), or the on-call radiologist (if at night) should be notified if there are any problems such as excessive back or neck pain, weakness, or fever
The patient can usually resume normal activity the following day
The patient should follow-up with his or her referring physician
We will call all patients the following day to see how they are doing
