Select Nerve Root Block Follow-Up Care

I. Post-Procedure Care
  • Following the selective nerve root block procedure, the patient is placed in the recovery room long enough to be assessed and to evaluate the pain response
  • If there are no complications, the patient is discharged within 30-60 minutes
  • Occasionally, there may be leg/buttocks numbness or weakness in the distribution of the nerve injected. This typically lasts from minutes to 1-2 hours.

    II. Post-Discharge Instructions

  • At discharge, the patient should be accompanied by a responsible person who will drive them home
  • Activity should be limited for the remainder of the day, with no operating of heavy equipment or driving
  • The radiologist who performed the procedure (if during the day), or the on-call radiologist (if at night) should be notified if there are any problems such as excessive back or neck pain, weakness, or fever
  • The patient can usually resume normal activity the following day
  • The patient should follow-up with his or her referring physician
  • We will call all patients the following day to see how they are doing
